1. Context of installation
A regional wastewater treatment plant in Western Australia was facing inefficiencies and interruptions due to the variable quality of the wash water reused from a pond.
This caused frequent blockages of the nozzles and of the sludge dewatering systems, severely impacting operations. The water authority was seeking a filtration solution for the pond effluent, with stringent space and hydraulic constraints, and that would ensure minimal disruption during installation.
2. Proposed solution
MAK Water, a distributor for MITA Water Technologies in Oceania, was commissioned to supply a pre-assembled pile cloth drum filter.
This system, which represents one of the key technologies of MITA Water Technologies (part of the Axius Water group), offers a capacity of 30 m³/h with a 6 m² filter surface, using 5µm nominal microfiber media with a 316 stainless steel structure. Its installation upstream of the reuse tanks utilized gravity and the existing pumping infrastructure without needing modifications.
MITA WT cloth filters are valued for their very high solids removal efficiency, low energy use (gravity filtration, minimal backwashing), operational continuity even during washing, and remarkable flexibility in handling variable loads.
3. Results and key success factors
The installation of the drum filter brought immediate and significant benefits. The problem of spray nozzle blockages was completely eliminated, resolving the associated downtime. The plant now consistently achieves a filtered effluent quality of 5-10 mgTSS/L, allowing for the effective reuse of water for site reticulation and equipment wash-down.
Operating costs are extremely low (<4.6 kWh/day), with minimal operator intervention required. As the system was pre-assembled off-site, the installation was simple, causing minimal disruption to the plant’s main operations.
These results highlight how the solution not only resolved an operational criticality but also improved the overall efficiency and sustainability of the plant, in line with Axius Water’s goals of improving water quality and promoting the reuse of treated water.
