Water Supply and Wastewater Treatment for Mining Activities in Australia

This integrated solution provided a reliable water supply and compliant wastewater treatment for a mining operation in the West Pilbara region. By utilizing MITA WT Biocombi systems and SWRO systems from MAK Water (a MITA partner in Oceania), the project has ensured high-quality potable water and efficient wastewater management, minimizing maintenance and maximizing operational efficiency in a context of limited freshwater resources, demonstrating a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental compliance.

  • Supply of high-quality potable water for a total of 8.7 MLD (Million Liters per Day), from containerized SWRO systems (3.3 MLD with 2 trains at 1656 m³/day) and shed-housed SWRO (5.4 MLD with 3 trains at 1800 m³/day)
  • Effective pre-treatment via Ultrafiltration (UF) with two UF trains each at 3175 m³/day, significantly reducing the fouling of the SWRO membranes
  • Wastewater treatment through the Biocombi system, which ensures regulatory compliance and operates with minimal energy consumption

1. Context of installation

To address these complex needs, MAK Water, as a leading provider and distributor of MITA WT technologies in Oceania, designed and implemented an integrated and state-of-the-art solution.

This solution included the installation of Seawater Reverse Osmosis (SWRO) plants, essential for desalination and the production of potable water. To optimize the performance of the SWRO plants and extend their operational life, an Ultrafiltration (UF) pre-treatment system was integrated.

Crucial for the sustainable management of wastewater, the solution also featured a Biocombi treatment system produced by MITA WT. The Biocombi offers highly efficient biological oxidation and deep-bed filtration, specifically designed for treating wastewater from small communities or similar contexts, with minimal footprint and energy consumption, making it ideal for this type of industrial application.

MAK Water’s approach ensured a consistent water supply and effective wastewater management.

3. Results and key success factors

The implementation of this integrated solution has led to significant results and numerous benefits for the mining operation. Firstly, the containerized SWRO plants have guaranteed a reliable and constant supply of high-quality potable water, crucial for supporting the mining operations and associated infrastructure.

Secondly, the UF pre-treatment has drastically reduced the fouling of the SWRO membranes, minimizing maintenance requirements and system downtime. Regarding wastewater, the Biocombi system has ensured that the water is treated safely, fully complying with regulatory standards and reinforcing the client’s commitment to environmental sustainability.

The solution as a whole represented a seamless approach to managing water supply and wastewater, contributing to the long-term sustainability of the project and meeting supply and treatment needs in compliance with environmental standards.
